Beaches
Herm Island offers visitors a delightful variety of coastline. Spend time relaxing and playing on the beautiful beaches; you are spoilt for choice. Turquoise blue water gently laps the glistening white sand providing a safe, clean environment to build sandcastles and paddle in the sea.
Jobs
Herm is a working community entirely dependent on tourism for its income. The island is open all year round and employs a mix of permanent residents and seasonal staff. Our main season runs from April to October when all departments on the island are open. From November to March the island is managed by a significantly reduced workforce.
Herm has a permanent community of 65 residents, including families with children. These people live and work on the island all year round, but during the peak season, the island population increases by up to 100 seasonal staff, who will mostly also be given accommodation on the island. We have a wide range of seasonal positions available in all departments. Start and finish dates vary, with some staff being taken on for the whole season and others just for part of it.

History
Herm has enjoyed a colourful history, and many vestiges of the past can still be seen. The island of today is quite different to bygone eras when the public had no access. Great efforts were made in many ways to harness the island’s assets and allure before the advent of tourism.
The island has been home to Neolithic man, monks, quarrymen, farmers, writers, artists and wealthy entrepreneurs.
A brief outline of some of the island's history is below, but you can find more details of their rich and colourful lifestyles in the book, 'Hidden Treasures of Herm Island' by Catherine Kalamis, available at The Herm Shop.
Where to eat
Herm’s restaurants, pubs, and cafés have something to suit everyone; from formal dining and gourmet cuisine, to bistro or pub grub and beach café sarnies and salads. We pride ourselves in offering fresh, quality and, where possible, local products with a great team of chefs and front of house service team.

Mermaid Tavern
The Mermaid Tavern was named after an old cargo vessel used many years ago to carry supplies to the island. Originally a fisherman’s pub, The Mermaid Tavern’s cheerful, informal atmosphere is popular all year round, especially during the busy summer months when customers can sit out in the courtyard to enjoy a drink in the sun. Come rain or shine the tavern is great for hearty pub meals enjoyed either out in the courtyard or inside the pub next to a roaring fire.
Chef’s Theatre Dining is also available for group or party bookings on the Courtyard Top Deck area.
